Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, as amended, through the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974 states it is against the law to discriminate against persons in the buying, renting or financing of houses or apartments because of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, family status or handicap.

Any person or persons wishing to file a complaint of housing discrimination in the Town may do so by informing Nancy Deckard, Town Administrator, Town of Scotland Neck, 1310 Main Street, PO Box 537, Scotland Neck, NC 27874, phone: 1-252-826-3152, TDD: 1-800-735-2962, of the facts and circumstances of the alleged discriminatory act or practice;

Upon receiving a housing discrimination complaint, the Town shall inform the North Carolina Human Relations Commission (Commission) and the complainant about the complaint within ten (10) calendar days of receipt for conciliation and resolution. The Town shall then assist the Commission and the complainant in filing an official written housing discrimination complaint with the Commission, pursuant to the State Fair Housing Act and Title VIII; The Town shall offer its assistance to the Commission in the investigation and conciliation of all housing discrimination complaints which are based upon events occurring in Scotland Neck, North Carolina.
